Opportunities for professional careers

The Department offers a wide range of professional careers which will enable you to continue pursuing your chosen career path.

Accountants and financial professionals

All should have professional qualifications from the Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies.

Assurance providers

All should have professional qualifications from the Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies.

Audit

All should have professional qualifications from Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies or have Membership of the Institute of Internal Auditors

Communication

All are recruited through the Government Communications Network or must satisfy their requirements.

Doctors

All should have at least a 2:1 in a single or combined economics degree. For more information see the General Medical Council website.

Economists

All should have at least a 2:1 in a single or combined economics degree. For more information see the Government Economic Service website.

Human Resources

Senior HR appointments may need to have a Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD or MICIPD) or equivalent. For more information, see the Civil Service Human Resources website.

IT

Senior IS appointments may need a degree and/or recognised IS qualification e.g. ITIL / ISEB / BCS. For more information see OGC - IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL)Information System Examining Board,   British Computer Society 

Lawyers

All should be qualified solicitors or barristers (unless they are recruited as trainee solicitors or pupil barristers).

Operational Research

All must have, or be expecting in the academic year in which they apply, a good degree (2:1 or better, or an MSc or PhD) in a numerate discipline. Recruitment into the DWP is managed by the Government Operational Research Service.

Policy Delivery and Operational Delivery

No formal qualifications are currently required but we are developing formal recognition of the technical expertise required for each of these areas

Procurement and strategic sourcing

All should hold full Membership of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply.

Psychologists

All should have a first degree in Psychology and ideally a postgraduate qualification in Occupational Psychology recognised by the British Psychological Society. Prospective applicants should also be either Chartered Occupational Psychologists or be able to demonstrate progress towards becoming a Chartered Occupational Psychologist. Recruitment into DWP is managed by the Occupational Psychology Division.

Social Researchers

All should have a first or upper second-class degree (where divided) or a higher degree in a relevant social science discipline as well as formal accredited training in social research methods as either part of a degree or other accredited course. Statisticians

All should have a first or second class honours degree in a numerate discipline (e.g. mathematics, economics, sciences, business studies, psychology and geography).. Recruitment into DWP is managed by the Government Statistical Service.
