Frequently asked questions

How do I apply for a job in DWP?

We advertise all DWP jobs in Jobcentres and under current vacancies on the DWP website. Some specialist jobs are advertised on the relevant website to that speciality. Each advert tells you how to apply.

I have special needs, will DWP help me to apply for a job?

DWP is an equal opportunity employer and we aim to supply whatever you need to ensure you have a fair and equal chance when applying for a job with us. Get in touch with the person named in the job vacancy details and tell them about your special needs.

Do I need any particular educational qualifications to work in DWP?

You only need educational qualifications for specialist jobs.

What type of questions do I have to answer in the Civil Service Online Test?

The Civil Service initial sift is a situational judgement test where you will be asked to review a range of scenarios and questions with multiple choice answers. You will select what you think is the best answer for each scenario. There are no wrong answers but some are more suitable than others. You will have the opportunity to view example questions prior to starting the test, however, once you have started the test you must complete it in one sitting.

I am currently working for someone else, can I make an appointment to sit the tests?

The Civil Service initial sift is an online test and the advert will clearly state how long the test will be open for. This means that you can sit the test at anytime, from any internet enable computer (whether it be work, home or elsewhere) between these dates outlined in the advert.

How long does the recruitment process last?

This depends on the number of applicants for the jobs. However we try to complete every exercise within twelve weeks from the job advert.

Why does the recruitment process take so long?

Following the completion of an application form and completion of the Civil Service Online Tests we will carry out an initial sift to short-list candidates and finally we will interview you. We must wait until all candidates have been through the full process before offering any jobs.

When can I start work for the DWP, assuming I am successful?

Following the job offer, we need to carry out standard pre-appointment checks before agreeing a start date. The checks are based on the information you supply throughout the exercise. The checks can take up to 20 days.

Is there anything I can do to help with the pre-appointment checks?

You will need to provide proof of your age, identity and nationality. The sooner you can let us have this proof, the sooner we can complete the checks.

Will I be able to work part-time, or must I work full-time?

We have a wide range of working patterns available, each advert will advise which working patterns are available for that job.
