About DWP

DWP equality schemes

Under the equality legislation that applied up to 2010, the Department for Work and Pensions was required to produce and publish race, disability and gender equality schemes. These schemes were used to set out how we were taking forward our legal duties.

Equality schemes were written documents describing a complete picture of what the organisation was doing to promote equality for both customers and staff. Amongst other things, they included an action plan, which was developed taking into account customers’ views about where we most needed to act.

Equality schemes were reviewed every three years and progress reports were published annually until 2010.

DWP equality information

From 2010, under the new Equality Act, Public Sector Equality Duty, as a public authority, the Department for Work and Pensions is required to publish, at least annually, relevant, proportionate information to demonstrate our compliance with the legislation. This replaces the previous requirement to publish equality schemes.
