Glasgow District Background

Glasgow District is one of 6 Jobcentre Plus Districts in Scotland, covering the area within the Glasgow City Council boundary. The Glasgow labour market has changed significantly over the last 30 years. In the early 70’s nearly 50% of jobs were in construction or production. Glasgow has reflected the national trend in labour market changes and now there are less than 25% of these jobs. The majority of jobs are now in the service sector. Over the last 20 years, Glasgow has become a major hub of the Scottish economy.

The city is home to 13,750* firms, including one-quarter of Scotland’s Largest businesses (* Source-BERR – Nomis March 2010). Prior to the recession Glasgow’s jobs base had grown at nearly twice the rate for Scotland and Britain but as a result of the recession there have been significant redundancies. The city is pivotal to the function of the local labour market attracting significant numbers of workers from surrounding local authority areas (source-Scottish Enterprise).

The number of working age residents in the city is 392,000* of which 287,200* are economically active. (*Source – NOMIS March 2010)
